In theory the bars will stop selling alcohol at 18:00 on April 1st and continue dry throughout Sunday (up until midnight).

There will be many beer bars that will continue to sell soft drinks (and maybe more if hidden away or disguised). But spare a thought for the owners, as the police do punish those caught out. Gogo bars are generally closed on Saturday evening.

Previous occasions have seen a resumption of Sunday festivities ahead of the appointed midnight hour, some as early as 8pm.

I Spotted a sign on Pratamnak Road heralding the return of the Ibiza (Boom Boom) disco. This venue was previously noted as having a slightly edgy atmosphere but was very useful for being the most late night of the discos with dancing until dawn.

Of course that was before the current 12/1/2/3am closing time dictates.

Construction has started in the now closed Marilyn A-GoGo above the Siren beer bars. Happened to run across the guy that is the owner. This is going to have 9-10 beer bars and 2 gogos. The front will be open to the street so the beach road traffic will be able to see the going's on there. They claim 3 months to opening.
 

Very Nice Memories

A new GoGo venue has started in Soi LK Metro off 2nd Road: Soi Diana Inn. Memories Gentleman's Club is located just a couple of doors down from Champagne A-GoGo and nextdoor to Lolita's.

The venue has converted from a bar and restaurant and the first comment on the venue is that it is: very nice inside and it will be a top go-go very soon, the boss is Canadian.

The banner proclaims that "The Roof will be back this April". There was recently a Roof A-GoGo upstairs at Soi Diamond, previously it was a hostess bar, perhaps that was the Roof Night Club.

Swedish manufacturer Biosensor, has secured an order for five BIOSENS systems from Thai narcotics police. The order value is worth close to USD200,000 and the first for a Biosensor system in South East Asia.

Last year Thai narcotics police tried BIOSENS systems on several occasions and in the process snagged a 12,000 methamphetamine pill haul near Chiang Rai. At another operation at a night club in Pattaya, a number of heroin users were pinpointed instantly by the system.

Biosensor has developed a unique vapour and trace technology based upon biotechnological sensoring. It can be likened to an artificial dog nose and the technology detects both explosives and narcotics simultaneously at a molecular level.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confiscated a large amount of  performance aids, mostly made in China, and will give itself more authority to curb smuggling of the products. The FDA seized the goods last month smuggled through Don Muang airport.

The office confiscated 2,400 tablets of enhancement drugs, 140 bottles of Spanish fly used as sleeping pills, 26,400 slimming pills, 320 bottles of blemish cream, 2,800 sex toys and unregistered medicine. The total was worth more than 1.3 million baht. The authorities also took legal action against 68 smugglers, including one Thai. The illegal products were distributed around Yaowarat.

In a bid to prevent smuggling of sex toys and other sex products, the office wants to list them as non-commercial medical equipment so officials could immediately take action.

At present the agency cannot seize the products without cooperation from the Consumer Protection Office because they are not listed as medical tools.

People convicted of smuggling non-registered medicines can be fined up to 5,000 baht or sentenced to three years in prison or both.

Bob who owns the small Goldfingers go go bar in soi 7 has bought the venue and now all the dancers are of the 3rd gender.

The previous incarnation as a girls A-GoGo closed in October 2005 after struggling to get enough momentum going in such a small venue.

Which I'm certain is bullshit as I had Asian and European friends who were allowed to enter and they weren't so called members!!! They were first time tourist like me as well.

Walking street in South Pattaya played host to a very special guest on Tuesday Night. Police General Saireepisoot, the Commander of the Police Audit Commission came to the street as part of a visit to Pattaya to ensure that the Police are undertaking their duties with diligence and professionalism and he also checked out the nightlife of Pattaya to ensure that nothing which constitutes unlawful activity was taking place.

On Walking Street he visited a number of go-go bars including The Sea, Superbaby and Polo and was satisfied that each establishment was complying with the law. The entourage made its way down the full length of Walking Street and a report of his findings will be sent to the National Police Chief at a later date.

To those brave people who step in to stop fights...it's not a wise thing to do in Thailand, especially when Thai men and drink are involved. (On the other hand, if a fight is stopped it can save a life here as opposed to a mere beating in Farangland)

Police were called to the front of the Eastiny Inn Hotel in Soi 8 after a late night disturbance involving three Thai men and an English Tourist. The case begins with a verbal altercation between a bar girl and two Thai men, one man had been admiring the girl who works at one of the bars inside the Soi for some time, however on a number of occasions, she has refused his advances and this night was no different.

Ashley Brown from England was drinking in a nearby bar and witnessed the confrontation and decided to get involved and attempted to break up the argument. The two men told the English man to mind his own business and proceeded to attack him with an iron bar.

A bar owner, Khun Pitack saw the fight and attempted to help the tourist without success and was injured in the process. Both were taken to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital and were treated for their injuries.

The two attackers were arrested and taken to Pattaya Police Station where they were charged with assault and locked up.

The Blue Lagoon is a little off the beaten track but in the end it was not hard to find. There is a small GoGo sign on Pattaya Tai along with a couple of welcome girls. A short trip down a dark passage, a stroll across the condo car park, a few steps through an associated beer bar and you are there.

The bar has about 15 top notch girls, not an oldie in sight. Full marks to the casting committee. The girls have the choice of attire for dancing with a very flexible skirt/knicker combination. They can choose to be fully modest, fully immodest, knickerless below a short skirt, or knickerless below a longer triangular affair that reveals little unless held up.

There are 5 stages in table dancing style, three are surrounded by comfortable bench seating and the others by stools. Although it looks like table dancing, it is run more like stage side gogo. Also the girls do not change tables during their 5 song stint so this limits the 20 baht tip-look-see opportunities.

The shows are fun and sexy too. There is a lesbian shower show (the shower cubicle is not viewable by all areas of the bar so choose your seat accordingly). The later shows were performed on all tables though. The shows are not particularly original but given that the girls are nude, young, fun and sexy then I would elect these over Angelwitch anytime.

The drink prices are very reasonable too, so almost full marks. The only lost mark was that there were insufficient girls to dance, do shows, and play hostess. I departed when my drinks partner danced for 10 out of 12 songs.

I have often dropped by in the hope that things would have improved but really, it has never rally captured the magic it had in its first year of operation. But perhaps, after a few years of being on the outer they have returned to being one of the better bars again. The Dollhouse has a new manager, many new staff, a new sound system and some very attractive girls. The happy hour is 7:30 - 9:00 PM with local drinks a competitively priced 45 baht and as a bonus, they have Tiger Beer on tap for 45 baht ALL NIGHT. The Dollhouse Pattaya is back on the must visit list.

One of the go-go bars on my usual drinking route has for reasons best known to itself started to employ a couple of ladyboys to stand outside and entice customers inside.

However I was dismayed on my last visit to see the two aforementioned ladyboys's dancing on stage along with the rest of the girls.

What on earth makes the owners/management of such establishments think that guys going into lady go-gos want to see a couple of blokes in bikinis dancing on stage.

I realise that there are people attracted to such things but why or why can they not just stick to the already established katoey bars.

It seems that the Siam Country Golf club is having a little difficulty recruiting sufficient members and is considering a year off. This is proving a worrying though for the short time bars on the route from Pattaya. The Butterfly Bar in particular takes advantage of those 'just going for a round of golf dear'. 

A few bars in Soi 8 have suffered even more pressing problems as the bulldozers have already moved in to clear the way for an Eastiny Hotel development. The Vicki Bar, Monica Lewinski and neighbours are now no more.

Short Time Privacy

Pattaya police have raided several short-time hotels, Love Motels and upstairs short time rooms in North Pattaya and the Pattaya-Naklua area. Several youngsters (under 18) and foreigners without proper identification were discovered during the raid.

CEB are no Suckers

Club Electric Blue has now closed in Walking Street. It is being refitted over the next 5 months as a cabaret venue.

In the meantime, a Club Electric Blue 2 or Club Electric Blue Jnr will open in Soi Diamond. It is located on the north end, away from Walking Street and next door to the Casino Club. In a previous incarnation it was a Swiss massage shop.

It is a new small venue originally earmarked for a new blow job venue, Suckers. However police weren't keen on the idea and the venue will now be opened as another table dancing venue. Presumably some of the girls from CEB will relocate to this bar.

New Player in the Roof

Two new GoGos have opened up in the last couple of days. Tiger A-GoGo on the upper floor of Soi Diamond is in the venue previously know as The Roof and then New Player.

Went in Tiger A-GoGo today and everything was painted in white except the chromed poles, white soft cushioned chairs along the walls and once again 5 dancing tables with 1 to 4 chrome poles.

About 20 girls in there, in spite of the white colours it was very difficult to see the girls, just red lights and ultra violet tubes that hardly even gave some guiding lights in there!

Once again it was the table dancing routine with girls crawling and climbing around the place between the tunes! Girls didn't show any tits, had some small white tops but kept them on?

A meeting now from the Town-in-Town Hotel in Central Pattaya, co-chaired by Khun Chawalit, Deputy Chief of Banglamung District and Police Colonel Somnook, the Pattaya Police Chief.

A selection of bar operators were called to the meeting to discuss plans to reintroduce the bar operating regulations which have been relaxed over the previous high season months.

The Interior Minister is due in Pattaya shortly and local authorities must ensure that the law is adhered to. For now the 1am closing time for bars must be followed and nudity and explicit shows cannot be conducted.

It is expected that some bars will disregard these instructions. They were told that if the Interior Ministry catch any bars operating outside the law, the penalties will be severe.

The Interior Minister, Air Chief-Marshall Kongdaert is expected to make a detailed inspection of bars and other late night entertainment venues around Pattaya this coming Friday and Saturday. The bar operators were also told to ensure that their operating licenses are correct.

The underwhelming high season peak seems to have passed and now the accent is on closures.

Stickman confirmed the demise of Club Electric Blue in its GoGo guise. The theories suggest that although the number of tourists visiting Pattaya remains high, the GoGos aren't adapting to the pattern of change from farang to Asian.

It seems that Circus A-GoGo has closed (again). Hardly surprising that customers don't want to drink in a lonely venue watching overdressed girls when there are so many nude fun bars nearby.

I have also heard rumours that Hootys maybe next on the closure list.

A couple of snippets from various forums that are unconfirmed.

A chunk of soi 8 has been boarded off (and the bars closed) between the end of my last trip here about 19 December & the start of my current trip 20 January - that area is opposite Cherry Bar.

Then I first noticed the boarding-off on arrival here in January I was suprised to see such a large area affected but saw advertisements stuck on the boarding about a new A-GoGo, Dream Bar. It is the very small go go within the Prince Hotel ground floor and which operated under Show Girls for a short while (a matter of weeks before it opened and closed) - looked in there last night but it was closed! So maybe Dream Go Go is no more.

There was also talk of further police raids on GoGos last night with possibly more to come.

Tourist Police received a complaint at his office in Bangkok from the Animal Welfare Association of Thailand regarding a Go-go bar in South Pattaya that was conducting shows using live animals. They sent in an undercover operative with a secret camera to capture the stage shows. The evidence was examined and it was decided that the establishment, Top Girls Go-go Bar in Soi 14 off of Walking Street should be raided.

On Friday Night the raid took place. Five female performers were arrested and evidence such as Goldfish, Banana’s, Candles and sex toys were seized. The Manager of the venue, Khun Bawinoot was arrested along with the performers and a report of the incident has now been sent to the Governor of Chonburi Province who will now decided if the establishment should be closed on a temporary or permanent basis.

Comings and Goings

Perhaps the writer is referring to the gogo bar recently acquired by Shark. They should call the new bar Shark Suckers and invest in a painfully appropriate neon sign.

One bar owner who was planning to open another palace of the chrome pole - in Soi Diamond - has had a change of heart and is set to open his doors as a den of oral stimulation instead, to be called, appropriately, Suckers. It will, as the new regime has pointed out, be the only den devoted to phallic nibbling in the Walking Street area.

Away from the fleshpots of Walking Street, there are rumours of a planned gogo to open in Center Condo (South Pattaya Road).

Club Electric Blue is about to close for extensive alterations. A little bird whispered to me this information and having contacted owner Andy I finally got this reply: Yes it is true , CEB will be closing in a few weeks, and should re-open June/July after a 20 million re-model. A very new idea for Pattaya.

I suppose there were more reasons then just the idea of putting some more atmosphere for already closing the second floor. Troubled Andy.... But as a occasional visitor, I must admit that the beauty of his girls went already down dramatically. So maybe it is not such a loss.

No Smoking in Bars

The Public Health Ministry is going all out in its effort to stop smoking among Thais with its comprehensive plans ranging from the ban on small packets of cigarettes to declaring pubs and bars smoking free.

In the future, non-smokers may also be able to seek compensation from cigarette companies if they fell ill because of smoking-filled environment.

We have prepared both short-term and long-term measures to curb smoking, Public Health Minister Pinij Charusombat said.

For the short-term measures, Pinij said his ministry was going to ban the small packets of cigarettes or retailing it singles - not the whole pack - before the end of this year.

By 2008, Pinij said his ministry would declare all pubs, bars and entertainment venues to become smoking free. We will push for necessary legislation, he said.

On the long-term measure, he said his ministry would open a legal channel for smoking victims to sue to cigarette companies for their health damages.

Bars in Soi 6 were told on Friday around noon by the local police that there is a Big Chief from Bangkok in town for the next month or maybe longer Therefore the bars need to be discrete in the way they operate. This is especially true in regard to the use of in-house short time rooms, (as most if not all of them are illegal). Also they were warned to be prepared for possible raids, the use of farangs as undercover operatives in stings and to verify that all their staff are of legal age.

There was no order to close early although it is possible some bars may have done that on their own volition

The entire staff of Club Boesche including girls, doorman, etc did not show up for work two nights ago. it was a salary related dispute. A mamasan who had been let go only a couple of days earlier was re-hired and came back with 6 of "her girls" which is how they came to open eventually.

Champagne has also closed its doors but I am not yet aware of the reason or for how long.

Police Raid Walking Street

Showing was a no-no last night. Word was that ID checks were to be expected and any girl without one would be lifted but that didn't materialise. The word was passed around to several gogos that the Boys in Brown from Bangkok were in town and that no showing was to be allowed.

There was two police trucks on Walking Street tonight, the first entered at 1 a.m., the second came about 15 minutes later. All the bars, shut their lights off straight away. Does this mean the 3 a.m. festive extension is over and the 1 a.m. closing rule now applies?

Yet it's been reported that the police have already given their approval for 3am opening. But then the city officials haven't. And isn't this supposed to be permanent and approved by Parliament as a result of zoning? Confused?

You can't be sure at this stage (nothing new there then ) but I suspect it's a storm in a teacup and just, yet another, "one" off. Not dissimilar to Friday night when the Bangkok boys were in town and everybody was behaving themselves for a while.

I am not sure yet what is on offer but Balls Massage is on the card (the testicular variety as opposed to a ball of herbs). As far as I know this is a first for Pattaya and is following Bangkok's lead.

Draught Ails at Club Electric Blue and VIP

There has been talk about Pattaya's GoGo bars taking away draught beer. Club Electric Blue have now adopted this approach. A bottle of beer is now 95 Baht (In fact most drinks on the menu are now a reasonable 95 Baht)

On a tiny snapshot of a midweek 10pm visit I would say that the bar is declining. The upstairs is now curtained off and the table dancing circuit had reduced to one table. Not many customers were present when I visited

The VIP Club A-GoGo features girls dancing in disco wear. Some were pretty cute but somehow I prefer to see my cute girls with less clothes and I certainly don't like playing premium prices to see overdressed girls. Well it seems that I am not the only one and now the bar have significantly slashed their prices to 45 Baht draught and 85 Baht bottled beer.

Grenade Attack on Thai Oriented Pub

A unit from the Royal Thai Navy Bomb Disposal Unit was called to the Thai oriented Bitchy Pub on Pattaya Third Road on Sunday Morning after a report of an unexploded hand grenade which had been discovered in the toilets of the pub. There was evidence of a hole in the roof and the pin which had already been removed was found just outside the venue.

The item was made safe and removed by a bomb disposal team who mentioned that they were extremely lucky the device did not explode. Police theorize the grenade was thrown into the premises during the night and the person or persons who threw it did not intend to kill anyone but instead wanted to cause extensive damage to the venue.

For now the attack remains a mystery however theory’s regarding a dispute with a rival business are currently being investigated. For now, the attack is surely going to effect trade at this venue which attracts large amounts of customers on a daily basis.

New Year's Resolution: No More Expensive Barfines

On a slightly different view, the idea of large bar fines on special days is to stop the girls leaving and ensure that drinking customers don't stop drinking due to a dead atmosphere caused by a shortage of girls. If the fine is left at the normal 500ish Baht then the girls themselves pay it and go to their own New Year parties.

Carousel A Gogo in Pattaya may have broken the record for the most expensive barfine in a gogo bar when they were asking 1,500 baht for the barfine for showgirls on New Year's Eve. It was "only" 1,000 baht for a regular dancer. Needless to say, there were still many showgirls there very late into the evening.

Tables at the Ready

It seems that the Naughty Girls on Soi Diamond is gearing up for table dancing. The old bench seating has been removed and replaced by table dancing stages. There is still a narrow central stage though. There is also a shower installed at the back of the bar.

Plenty of pretty girls are ready to mount the tables but at the early hour of 9pm the bar was dead and the girls were keeping their own company. The handful of customers were left looking glummly into their beers

More Witches than Angels

Angelwitch on Walking Street Soi 15 is an impressive new purpose built venue. A circular layout with stalls and a balcony overlooking a central stage.  The two floors are both connected to the stage via substantial chrome ladders and walkways. The sounds and lights set up is excellent

On the opening night the overdressed and bikini clad dancing girls were below average. There are two shifts of a dozen girls who alternate. They don't move from there allotted pole.

There may have been witches on stage but there was a welcoming committee of angel hostesses. I am not sure what the deal is with the hostesses.

I could not face the prospect of watching below par girls whilst supping expensive beer so I did not stay for the shows. Others reported on the shows though:

My girls liked the shows and they have a lot of them so the gogo girls did not dance all that much. The shows were put together well, Matt used Bangkok girls last night, but having one or two girls on stage in a club that size is a big problem. Simply does not hold the attention, basically it was boring. I think guys in Pattaya want to see a lot more pussy.

I am sure that things will improve over the coming weeks. It is often the case that girls can be overdressed in the early days as local police and officials tend to be on the visitor's list.

According to the front page of the latest Pattaya Today, City Hall has announced that Walking Street is now allowed to sell and serve alcohol in bars and clubs until 3am. This is to last until the end of the current high season, though this date has not yet been announced. Over the past few months, many gogos have been staying open until 3 (and beyond), but it is good to see that this has now been made official.

Wirawat Kharkai, deputy mayor, chaired a meeting which included representatives of the business operators in Walking Street which is sometimes seen as a special zone because of its long established identity, proximity to the sea and adequate policing measures. He said that, for the foreseeable future, the Walking Street would be able to operate without licensing restrictions at night between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. The area includes the main street from the entrance, at the corner of Third Road, until the Bali Hai restaurant and the Siam Bayshore Hotel. Wirawat stated that the local authority administration was confident that the extension would increase business and enhance profits, but stressed that the discretion would last only until the end of the current high season, to be announced in due course. He agreed that Pattaya was still based on foreign and domestic tourism and accepted that people did not like to be told when to go home to their hotels.
